At the hobbyist level there are many opportunities for incorporating RFID into projects. It does not take the investment one might think also. You can be on your way to keyless entry into your dorm room or replace the garage door keypad with a keyless entry for less than $100!
Parallax
Parallax is a well-known distributor for computing needs. They sell an RFID Sampler Kit with a variety of passive tags and a reader module for $49.95.
Radio Shack
Radio Shack sells the same Parallax reader in a bundle which apparently also includes the glass encased RFID tag as shown in the image. I personally have not seen it in stores but if true, for 4 cents more it is well worth it!
